TOUR OF THE COEUR D’ALENES
July 8, 2006
A one day cycling tour of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes which runs through the heart of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe's Aboriginal Territory. Starting in Wallace, Idaho, you'll travel alongside the trail where the Coeur d'Alene people hunted, fished and lived. You can pedal as little as 28 miles to Kellogg and back or as far as 130 miles round trip to Plummer. Along the way, you'll find yourself in quiet coves, you'll enjoy waterfowl, deer, elk or moose. Experience this beautiful, ancient land by bike and take whatever turnaround point you wish to return to historic Wallace, Idaho.
THE ROUTES
The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is a very easy route, with only about 2,000 feet of elevation, occurring at each end of the trail. You'll gain 1000 feet between Wallace & Kellogg and the other 1,000 ft between Plummer and Harrison. There is a maximum 2% grade and the elevation gain takes place over 15 miles. The Trail of the Coeur'd'Alenes is a paved trail. This ride can be done on a Road or Mountain Bike, if you go with the Mt. Bike, we would suggest a slicker tire!
Wallace to Kellogg - 28 miles round trip. Start off with breakfast in Wallace, ride to Kellogg for our first food stop. Take a gondola ride if you wish up to the top of Silver Mt., the longest single stage people carrier in the world. Gondola tickets can be purchased upon arrival…and yes, you can take your bike if you like. Food stop.
Wallace to Enaville – 38 miles round trip. Visit the historic Snake Pit Bar & Restaurant, a landmark for over 100 years, serving as a boomtown bar, railroad layover, hotel, house of ill repute, and starting point for loggers and miners of yesteryear. We’ll furnish water and Gatorade, but if you’d like to mozy in for a drink, eats and a look around, they’ll treat you with some true north Idaho hospitality. Water stop.
Wallace to Rose Lake – 66 miles round trip. You’ll pass by the Cataldo Mission, home of the oldest standing building in Idaho, which has played a key role in the development of the northwest. The entire mission was built without the use of a single nail and you can still see the small handprints in some of the walls of the little Indian children who helped in the construction. Food Stop.
Wallace to Cave Lake – 82 miles round trip. A good portion of the ride from Rose Lake to Cave Lake winds along or through waterways…a beautiful part of the journey. Water stop.
Wallace to Harrison – 100 miles round trip. Continue your tour on to the quaint little town of Harrison on beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene. We will have a bus in Harrison for those wishing to be transported back to Wallace. Stop by for an ice cream cone after feasting at our food stop in Harrison Park. Food stop.
Wallace to Plummer – 130 miles. The last leg of this option, between Harrison & Plummer, has been touted as the most spectacular scenery on the Trail of the Coeur d’ Alenes. This magnificent leg takes you on the bridge across Lake Chatcolet at the lower end of Lake Coeur d’Alene. A bus in Harrison awaits those not wishing to ride their bikes back to Wallace. Food stop.
